As a remote teacher around the world, I have many students, which means I have many parents. One of them calls me only when she’s furious and she starts every conversation at the absolute highest level of rage.
I actually look forward to it as it offers an opportunity for more growth in me.
God has taken me on a path where I’ve learned that a calm voice responding to anger is one of the most powerful things you can offer someone. So when she calls, I listen patiently. I ask clarifying questions. I respond with kindness and we discuss solutions.
In less than a minute, she’s settled. A solution is found and we move forward. After she hangs up, within a minute I get a text from her that says: I really appreciate you!
People are our greatest teachers.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
— Proverbs 15:1
“These trials will show that your faith is genuine — being tested as fire tests and purifies gold — though your faith is far more precious than mere gold.”
— 1 Peter 1:7
